It's always been a dream of mine to have an observation hive in my house. It just took a few years to convince my wife that it was a good idea.
I built this hive in my back yard, split a package off of one of my stronger hives, and installed it about a week ago in my living room.
In a week's time, I've already learned some good lessons about ventilation. I thought I had provided plenty of ventilation holes, but I didn't anticipate how warm the bees would get inside my 65 degree house. The outside of the hive gets very warm to the touch mid-afternoon when the bees are most active. I've had to install some small ventilation fans and drill a few vent holes in the escape tube. It seems to be working well.
I caught a glimpse of comb today. I'll post more pictures as the hive grows. You can also look on my Facebook page.
If you're interested in a project like this in your home or business, I'd love to talk to you about it!
